Melle
The town of Melle is a stop on the route to Santiago de Compostela. The three churches from the 11th and 12th centuries are listed as Historic Monuments, an absolute must for lovers of Romanesque art! The Saint-Hilaire church is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the route to Santiago de Compostela.

In the lively town of Melle you will also find cozy terraces, cafes and restaurants, shops, a cinema and a theater for events. “Les Halles de Melle” is one of the few remaining covered market halls from the early 20th century in the region and is located in the center. On Tuesday mornings there is a small vegetable market and on Friday mornings there is a large regional market in and around the hall.
A beautiful Arboretum (tree collection) has been built around the city with several large collections of tree species. A walk through the Arboretum is really worthwhile because of the beautiful collection of trees and the beautiful views over Melle.
A visit to the silver mines is also interesting and educational. They give guided tours in French and English.

Movement
You can easily go for a walk or run in the Arboretum from Maison Fossemagne.
The hills around Melle are full of marked walking and cycling paths. We have walking/cycling maps or you can contact the office de Tourisme in the center of Melle, 5 minutes away from Maison Fossemagne.
You can also keep moving if you get a map from the Office de Tourisme to take a walk along various historical sights.

If you want to keep your muscles strong during your holiday, you can choose from two fitness schools.

Nearest Golf Course: Le golf Bluegreen Niort-Romagné is a half hour drive from our Chambres d’Hôtes. This golf course is open to everyone and offers several interesting courses between beautiful waters and large bunkers.

Markets
There are many markets in towns and villages in the region. The Friday morning market in Melle is very nice with well-stocked stalls with delicious food, fresh flowers and clothing. There are many more markets on other days in villages in the area. Ask us for information and an overview.

Restaurants
Melle is blessed with nine restaurants within a 10-minute radius of Maison Fossemagne. Most restaurants have terraces for outdoor dining on warm summer evenings. Let us know where you would like to dine and we will arrange a reservation.

Brocantes/Vide Greniers
During the summer season there are many Brocantes and Vide-Greniers (flea markets) in the region. Ask us for an overview of when and where they take place. There are also various websites online with information about dates and locations.

Celles-sur-Belle –  9 min from Melle
The stately monastic buildings in the style of Louis the 14th from the 17th century with its beautiful church dominate the valley of Celles sur Belle. There are also beautiful French gardens adjacent to it. In the museum housed here you can see the chambers of the clergy, a reconstruction of a monastery room, but also a collection of objects of worship and clothing of clergy.
Many cultural activities take place in Celle-sur-Belle, and a classical music festival is organized in July-August.
In addition, there is regularly a flea market in the garden of the monastery, which gives a picturesque view and where you can browse for beautiful things. You can enjoy a snack and a drink in the local catering industry.

Coudray-Salbart – 20 min from Melle
The impressive fortress of Coudray-Salbart is listed as Historical Monuments and consists of six high towers connected by curtains. It was built in the 13th century by the lords of Parthenay  on an overhang over a river bend of the Sèvre niortaise, two kilometers from the town of Échiré, not far from  Niort. The castle has stood the test of time remarkably well, as it has never suffered major attacks in its long history. This makes it a beautiful example of military architecture from the Middle Ages!

Zoodyssee – 21 min from Melle
In the heart of the Chizé State Forest, near the town of Villiers-en-Bois, the Zoodyssée extends over 25 hectares. Nearly 500 animals from the European fauna, representing more than 60 different species, can be found in this ecological animal park. Two routes through the natural wooded area with meadows allow you to meet the Poitou donkey stallions, ibex, mouflon, European bison, red deer, roe deer, fallow deer, owls, lynx, wolves, foxes, otters, storks and birds of prey, and much more more!
It also organizes exhibitions on biodiversity, educational activities, guided tours in a carriage, trips through the forest every Thursday in July and August; for children there is a petting zoo and playground.

Niort – 30 min from Melle
The capital of the Deux-Sèvres, has a pleasant and pleasant historic center, where you can stroll through the shopping areas closed to cars.

The range of shops is very diverse and there are many cozy cafes and restaurants. Les Halles de Niort is a beautiful old covered market in the old town. The former Renaissance-style town hall, built on the site of the pillory used to be in the Middle Ages, now serves as a center for visual arts, and there are exhibitions of modern art to admire.

The Bernard d’Agesci  Museum is housed in a former girls’ lyceum, and has three different collections: Visual Arts (paintings from the 16th to the 19th century, sculptures from the 19th and 20th centuries, decorative arts), Natural History (ornithology, geology, osteology), and an Educational Conservation Center (overview of a century and a half of education with school supplies, scientific material).

Ruffec – 37 min away from Melle:
The town of Ruffec has a typical Romanesque church, Saint-André, and the narrow streets in the old center make it fun to look around. Along the banks of the Lien it is good to relax at the picturesque rapids where you can enjoy a picnic and where you will find the remains of the old castle. Ruffec has several events. Throughout the year, a market takes place on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, while a fair is organized on the 13th and 28th of each month. Vide Greniers are also organized in different periods.
In January, the International Festival of Humor and Dreams takes place in the streets of Ruffec. On this occasion, various shows are offered to the public, such as cabaret entertainment, or humorous plays.

Verteuil-sur-Charente – 40 min from Melle
Located around the beautiful castle and along the river you can enjoy great walking and cycling. The beautiful watermill at the foot of the castle still enhances this spot.

The Vallée des Singes – 45 min from Melle

Marais Poitevin – 45 min from Melle

This peaceful area extends over 112,000 hectares and can be explored on foot or by bike, by boat or in a canoe. In this protected natural area, located in the second largest wet zone in France in terms of area. The maze of hidden canals, the romantic reservoirs lined with duckweed, or the rows of ash, willow and poplar, provide a unique charm.

La Rochelle–1 hour 10 minutes from Melle

Cognac–1 hour 10 minutes from Melle
Cognac played an important role in the Middle Ages, especially in the wars between the French and the English, and changed hands several times. Angoulême–1 hour 10 minutes from Melle
Angoulême, city of art and history, is the French capital of the comic strip. At the bottom of the high city is the unmissable CNBDI, National Center of the Comic Strip, dedicated to the world of comics, with a superb collection of original drawings and a library. A paradise for enthusiasts. Also not to be missed is the International Comic Strip Festival, which takes place every year at the end of January. In the old city center you can find many nice shops and restaurants. One of the most beautiful sights in the city is St. Pierre Cathedral, a Byzantine-Romanesque cathedral from the 11th century AD.

The former episcopal palace houses the Museum of Fine Arts where one can view palaeontological, archaeological and ethnographic (African and Oceanic art) collections as well as paintings and ceramics.

BEACH – 1 hour 15 min from Melle
You will find plenty of beaches on the Atlantic coast.
You can visit a dressed beach or a nudist beach.
